The Jaguar Pickup Truck
In 2011 Stephanie and I had been married twenty years. I decided that since she had put up with me for that long, she needed a special anniversary gift. I thought a newer car would be appropriate, so we found a 2010 Lincoln that she really loved. It was pretty expensive. I owned a 2008 Ford F250 pickup truck that I wasn’t driving very much, so I decided to trade my pickup truck in on Stephanie’s Lincoln.
In 2012 I ran for the Tennessee State Senate and was out campaigning in Grundy County in my personal vehicle, a 2002 Jaguar S Type (a really powerful, supercharged, sports car, black and I loved it).
One of my friends in Grundy County remarked that it was odd for a person to be campaigning in a foreign sports car. I explained to him that this was my pickup truck. He was quizzical and said I was crazy. I responded, “No it’s my pickup truck. I’m going to tell you a story and when I’m finished, you will agree that this is a pickup truck”. He said, “Well I want to hear that story”!
I said, “Well my wife and I have been married for twenty years and I bought her a Lincoln for her anniversary present and I traded my F250 Pickup Truck in on her Lincoln, so now THIS is MY Pickup Truck! And if you don’t agree that this is my pickup truck, I’m going to tell YOUR wife what I did!”.
He looked thoughtfully at my vehicle and then said, “That’s a mighty nice pickup truck you’ve got there”!
