As we approach crunch-time, Progressives need to think about how we will hold Hillary’s feet to the fire.
The first question to be answered is “What is the fire?”
It is public opinion. Our only real weapon in combating the oligarchy. Overwhelming numbers are all we have, and all we need. Let’s not forget that this has been done before. What we are trying to do is roll back the rollback of all the societal gains made in the 20th Century. As we watch giant merger after giant merger, and trade deals that favor only the rich at the expense of our very sovereignty as well as our own working class, we realize that the promise of “Fiscal Conservatism and Social Liberalism” gives away half the store without a fight, and it is the half that pays for the other half. Soon there is no more fiscal backing for your social agenda (also known as “civilization”) and you are a full-blown (sorry/not sorry, Bill) Conservative.
We each have to wage individual and collective word of mouth campaigns to make sure the electorate doesn’t just go back to sleep believing Hillary has changed her spots or Bernie will be able to control her by himself. There are a few social media groups forming that are focusing on the day after the election, both in the effort to recruit people that will take an active role in party politics and recruiting supporters. There is an untapped ocean out there of people who are still not involved. It is up to us to let them know there is finally a good reason to step back in or get your feet wet for the first time.
If you pay attention to Hillary’s actions and let her words roll off of you, you will realize that her shift to Progressive rhetoric comes from her public face. Her V.P. pick is a slap in the face to Progressives, and the increasing speed with which Banksters and Neocons are flocking to her side should be sounding a loud alarm. She will do everything in her power to sprint back to the Right as soon as possible. That’s where we come in. Literally. We have to come into the Democratic Party and flip it to majority Progressive. Bernie has repeatedly stated his intention to do everything he can to make them “more” Progressive. I read “majority”. A minimal effort will do the trick. 47% of Democrats are already on board. They voted Progressive. Every single advocate of the #DemExit strategy I have spoken to ignores that simple fact, simply because it knocks down their entire house of cards. For pressure to be effective from the outside, the current DNC would have to care more about elections than their own positions of power within the party. I think we have seen their preference. That is the inside-outside strategy as I see it. Get Progressives from outside to come in and add their number to the ones already there.
The entire project still depends on Bernie himself, of course. The role he takes will determine our path and our strategy. He is serving out his term as the Independent Vermonters voted in, but I would be flabbergasted if he didn’t then switch to Democrat. I’m sure that he has bills waiting and ready to go. I’m hoping that he also spearheads a recruitment drive, complete with rallies. I can’t wait to read his book. The plan has always been a takeover of the Democrats. They think he is an insurgent, but they are wrong; he is The Exorcist. How did the idea that Bernie could not still lead his political revolution as one of the most powerful senators in history ever get started, anyway? Things are about to look up once again, and this time we’re ready.
